Study abroad Essay Having the chance to study Fashion Merchandising in Fashion Institute of Technology in the United States is a rare opportunity given to any international student.   My direct exposure to the fashion industry in New York has strengthened my knowledge on the complexities and competitiveness of the business.   However, my keen interest to succeed in this field should not begin and end in developing a strong fashion sense.   I also need to enhance my organization and networking skills and learn to deal with distributors and various markets around the world in order to be globally competitive. One of the steps that I need to take is to expand my social, cultural and economic horizon by taking Liberal Arts subjects in Yonsei University, the university that is known in developing students to become servant leaders to the world community. Since childhood, I have a keen interest in the field of fashion and as I continue to grow in knowledge about the intricate world of this industry, I am now at a stage where I want to prepare for an endeavor where I can combine both my interest and skills in fashion and my desire to create jobs for my countrymen in Korea.   Studying Liberal Arts would help me develop strong analytical stills and broad foundation of knowledge that would prepare me to cope in this highly competitive career. Yonsei University, being one of the leading universities in the world, has foreign enrollees from different parts of the globe.  Ã‚   Being with students of different nationalities would pave the way towards cultural appreciation and awareness that would help me design and market fashionable products using materials from different countries. Although being a Korean would give me the edge in adjusting to the country and to the local students in the university, I am still interested to gain more knowledge so I can share what I have learned to the students at Fashion Institute of Technology, New York.   This effort is my way of sharing my blessings to other students so they could apply the knowledge that they have gained from my experience to their field of endeavor.

Avatar Essay -- Film Review

Myths are supernatural or religious tales with cultural and historical backgrounds, often containing moral lessons that are valued by the culture they originated from. The movie Avatar is a modern myth, its popularity stemming from the inspiration it draws from familiar and widespread themes found in classical myths. Avatar reuses and refreshes these themes for current audiences. Ancient stories such as those of Icarus, Prometheus, Gilgamesh, and Hercules, as well as contemporary issues, represent many of the same themes that are revealed in Avatar. Avatar is the story of Jake Sully, a paraplegic marine that is sent to the world Pandora to take the place of his dead-brother's job as a Na’vi avatar pilot. The humans on Pandora use these avatars to communicate with the Na’vi and try to convince them to leave the Hometree, which is the pillar of life for the Na’vi; the humans want this so they can mine the element â€Å"unobtanium† the majority of which is located under Hometree. Jake initially pilots the avatar to achieve the military objectives that he is given, but over the course of the movie becomes initiated into the Na’vi culture through Neytiri and begins to disregard his orders. When the military commander finds out of Jake’s treason he gives the order to destroy Hometree and Jake is forced to reveal to the Na'vi his true intentions for piloting the avatar. This results in Jake being cast out of both the Na’vi and human societies. The humans then destroy the Hometree and man y of the Na’vi, Jake realizes that it is up to him to save the rest of the Na’vi and leads the resistance. To regain the trust of the Na’vi, Jake tames a Toruk, the most feared predator on Pandora. Through Jake’s leadership the Na’vi push back the humans and... ...is often seen as an invasion since many cities and innocent lives have been destroyed through this process. The outcome of this war is still being determined but based on the patterns of politics portrayed classical myths and Avatar it is clear that both sides will be greatly affected by the conflict. Avatar has been mocked as being highly derivative of other films and stories, but that merely shows how deep these same themes run in human psyche. Even in ancient times, the legends and tales contained similar issues and their heroes went through similar trials, showing just how important these things are to us as a race. The anxiety of doing too much and becoming too powerful is as widespread today as it was thousands of years ago. No matter the consequences we may face, humans will always try to reach just a little higher, and try to gain just a little more power.

Okefenokee Swamp Essay

Swamps can be seen in various perspectives and can convey different atmospheres associated with the respective swamp. The two passages on the Okefenokee Swamp both convey two different atmospheres and tones for the swamp, almost as if it was two different swamps. The author use of diction, detail and figurative language conveys how the swamp in the first passage is more inviting and safe versus the swamp in the second passage which is displayed in a more malicious tone. The author’s use of diction in the first passage and the second passage regarding the swamp is extremely different from one another. Throughout the first passage the author uses diction such as â€Å"primitive†, â€Å"festooned† and â€Å"exotic† to describe the swamp. The author’s formal tone and word choice helps convey that the swamp is a peaceful and safe environment that is appealing to others as well as to the author. The diction helps support as if the author is trying to persuade others to come to this swamp and enjoy its beauty Unlike the first passage, in the second passage the author uses diction such as â€Å"unfathomable†, â€Å"unconquerable† and â€Å"misery of life† to convey the atmosphere of this swamp. The author sees the swamp in the second passage in a more malicious and dark light that almost seems to be repelling the reader. The tone the author holds is almost as if he is trying to repel the reader from coming and visiting the swamp. It is negative and does not display any of the attributes that are associated with the swamp; instead it is very critical and focuses on all the peculiarities of the swamp. The word choice that is used in both the passages varies from one another and conveys different atmospheres for the swamp. Detail is a major factor throughout the two passages that helps distinguish the swamps in the passages from one another. In the first passage the author uses detail that have positive context such as, â€Å"Saucer-shaped depression of approximately 25 miles wide and 40 miles long that covers an area of more than 600 square miles.† This detail holds a revealing and formal tone that relays a pleasant atmosphere. It also has an alluring tone that persuades the reader to come visit the swamp and explore its vastness. In the second  passage the author uses details such as, â€Å"Four hundred and thirty thousand acres of stinging, biting and boring insects.† Although the second passage is also describing the enormous land size it is presented in a much more malicious and unappealing way. The author uses various literary devices throughout the two passages to show that he appreciates one swamp more than the other. In the first passage the author uses personification to expand and emphasize the beauty of the swamp. It states, â€Å"Exotic flowers. Among them floating hearts. Lilies. And rare orchards abound†, the floating hearts help convey an atmosphere of peace and playfulness that attracts the reader’s attention as well as persuades them to come visit the swamp. In the second passage the author uses a simile to show the distaste and lack of appreciation they held for the second swamp. The author describes the swamp â€Å"like some hellish zoo† almost conveying as if the swamp was every readers nightmare. The figurative language the author uses in the second passage is primarily focused on repelling the reader and persuading them not to come to the swamp and stay in the comforts of their own home. Unlike in the first passage where the figurate language was solely focused on inviting the reader to visit the swamp and enjoy the beauty and serenity the swamp had to offer. The author holds two very different tones when discussing the different swamps. The author uses different devices throughout the passages to create and convey a certain tone for each swamp. In the first passage the swamp is seen as something that holds beauty and is inviting unlike in the second passage where the swamp seems more malicious and repelling. The author uses various levels of diction, detail and figurative language to convey the tone and attitude they had toward each of the respective swamps, almost making it seem as if it were two different swamps entirely.

Striving for Accuracy and Persisting: The beginning of the semester my English teacher informed us that he will allow the class to revise papers if we do not like the grade we received on the first draft. Well, on a paper I thought I did excellent on came back with an eighty percent, I was a little disappointed.
